Exciting Events in May, Asian American Month

By Jennie L. Ilustre

The community is celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, in the capital and across the nation, in a variety of events that recognize achievements, raise public awareness on issues, as well as entertain.

apa month 2019

Starting on May 9, the 1882 Foundation will hold a three-day Symposium on the 150th Anniversary of Transcontinental Railroad.  Venue is the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in D.C.  And on May 11, the National Postal Museum will display interactive carts “about the hidden voices and stories of Chinese American Railroad workers and their contributions in the building of our nation.”

On May 22, “Crazy Rich Asians” author Kevin Kwan will talk about his works that aim to introduce contemporary Asian culture to an American audience. The Singaporean American is known for his bestselling novels. “Crazy Rich Asians,” with an all-Asian cast, author, and director, turned into box-office gold in the theaters. “China Rich Girlfriend” is currently in development in Hollywood. It is expected to hit the theaters in 2020. “Rich People Problems” completes the trilogy.

Venue for the talk is the Library of Congress in the nation’s capital. Tickets are free, but required. You can get Tickets on Eventbrite. The event will also be Livestreamed on Facebook and on YouTube.

Another important anniversary is the 25th Annual Awards Gala of the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS). Senator Tammy Duckworth is the keynote speaker.

The leaders of the National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP) said it best: “It’s been a crazy, rich year for Asians in North America. While the first film to feature a majority Asian and Asian American cast in a quarter of a century stole the show with its record-breaking performance at the box office, this past year saw AAPI achievement extend far beyond the silver screen.”

NAAAP enumerated some of these extraordinary feats. For the second time in a row, Americans elected a record number of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to Congress. Chloe Kim became the youngest woman to take home an Olympic snowboarding medal claiming the gold in PyeongChang. And Priyanka Chopra became the first Indian woman to grace the cover of U.S. Vogue magazine.

National Recognition

Likewise, government institutions recognized the achievements and contributions of Americans of Asian and Pacific Islanders ancestry through the years: “The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enriched America’s history and are instrumental in its future success.”

In his Presidential Proclamation, President Trump noted: “The contributions of Americans of Asian and Pacific Islander descent are firmly woven into the diverse fabric of our Nation. During Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of Americans of Asian and Pacific Islander heritage that have enriched our great country and helped define our history. These Americans bolster our economy as entrepreneurs, business owners, and employees who initiate and expand opportunities for their families, communities, and country.  Their languages, art, cuisine, and other cultural elements have enriched the American experience, and many have fearlessly answered the call of duty to defend our freedom as members of our Armed Forces.”

He added: “This month, we honor the more than 20 million Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who call America home, and we express our sincere gratitude to all those who are selflessly serving in the Armed Forces.  We recognize the achievements of Americans of Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage in education, business, science, the arts, government, and the Armed Forces, which have strengthened our Nation.  We celebrate their story as a unique part of the American story.”

In a statement, Speaker Nancy Pelosi remarked: “During Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, we celebrate the rich culture and beautiful diversity that the Asian American and Pacific Islander community has brought to our country.”

She added: “Generations of AAPI men and women endured unspeakable hardships and discrimination, and overcame repeated injustices and indignities.  Yet, through it all, they continue to defend and shape our nation with dignity and pride, advancing a freer, more just and equal future for themselves, their children and all Americans.  In San Francisco, we are particularly blessed by the vibrant and growing AAPI community that has enriched our city and proven what we have always known, that the beauty is in the mix.”

“This Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, we express our enduring gratitude for the AAPI community’s innumerable and lasting contributions to our nation,” Pelosi stressed. “To honor them and our promise to advance progress for all Americans, we must rededicate ourselves to protecting our heritage as a nation of immigrants and ensure that all people have the opportunity to pursue their American Dream.”

Below are other major events that demonstrate the community’s dedication to excellence and sustained contributions to the nation’s progress.
