Volunteer Opportunities

Compiled by Jade Philanthropy

Volunteering is the easiest way to show you care about your community.  Jade Philanthropy Society (JPS) is a newly formed organization of pan Asian women who believe that giving back is the best way to make positive changes and to lead by example.  JPS’s mission is to “encourage and facilitate local philanthropy by Asian Americans in the Washington, DC metropolitan area; and, to recognize, nurture, and promote current and future Asian American non-profit leaders and philanthropists.” The members of JPS are all community activists in the DC metro area, serve on numerous Boards of Directors, and volunteer regularly each quarter via our Asian American Day of Service.  For more information, visit their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/JadePhilanthropy.

Join Jade Philanthropy Society to support JPS Founder Rosemary Tran Lauer’s non profit organization, Devotion to Children, on May 11th, Mothers Day for their 5th Annual Mother’s Day 4 Miler & Fun Run!  This event brings hundreds of runners, walkers and families out to Reston on a gorgeous day in May. The DTC 4 Miler and One Mile Fun Run/Walk is run through North Reston on a 4 mile looped course starting at Browns Chapel at 8 am. Each pre-registered runner will receive a race shirt and there will be awards for overall and age group awards.  The first 800 runners to arrive to packet pickup will receive a Mother’s Day 4 Miler pin – as a constant reminder of your achievement! Packet pick up and late registration will be held on5/11/14 at the Potomac River Running Company in Reston and on race day at Browns Chapel Park in Reston.  In celebration of Mother’s Day, all racing Mother’s will receive a flower and the 4 mile course is stroller friendly.

All race proceeds will benefit Devotion to Children, a 501(c)3 organization headquartered in Reston and who’s mission is to fulfill the needs of children ages birth to six, so that they may become mentally, physically, and emotionally healthy members of society.  Founded in 1994 in Falls Church, DTC has collaborated with many like-minded organizations in the provision of childcare, health and educational services for needy families and their children.  Both working and unemployed families need access to affordable, quality preschool, daycare, health and educational services unavailable to them without outside assistance.  DTC works with families to identify those needs and works to fulfill them.  For more information, visit their website at www.devotiontochildren.org.

JPS Founder Rosemary Tran Lauer says “Thanks to the generous support of people like you, DTC has helped over 400 families with young children and with this year being our 20th anniversary, let’s kick it into overdrive!”

You can sign up to run in the race or jog/walk/stroll in the 1 mile fun run and of course, volunteers are needed to help check in runners, hand out water, setup and clean up along the race course. Volunteers should be high school age or older and service hours are available.  Volunteers are needed from 7 am until 1 pm.  Please contact Rosemary at Rosemary@devotiontochildren.org
