Health Fair.

Over 1,500 people received basic treatment and social services at the highly-successful Health Fair, organized by the Vietnamese Medical Society of North America, led by its president Dr. Sang Tran, on August 7 at NOVA. Some 600 had blood drawn to check for glucose, cholesterol, and hepatitis infection. The medical and dental teams were among some 350 volunteers. The event was in cooperation with local governmental and non-governmental organizations.


OCA Convention.

The Organization of Chinese Americans held its national convention in New York from August 4 to 7, with this year’s theme, “Advocacy through Compassion.” Photo shows Daphne Kwok, Chair of the White House Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, speaking at a panel discussion.


NAAAP Convention.

The 25th Annual NAAAP Convention and Diversity Career Fair, presented by Macy’s on August 11-13, was attended by members and advisors of the National Association of Asian American Professionals and other professionals across North America. The Macy’s fashion show drew over 200 spectators.


Indonesian Celebration.

India’s Independence Day.

Performers included classical dancers of the Natyabhoomi School of Dance, founded by Deepti Mukund and based in Gaithersburg, Maryland.


Dance Group.

Young performers of the fan dance provided entertainment at last month’s program featuring wushu (kung fu) world champions, held August 14 at the George Mason University Center for the Arts.

Good Governance.

Philippine Ambassador Jose L. Cuisia (center) attended the August 21 prayer forum, organized by US Pinoys for Good Governance, D.C. chapter. The event commemorated Senator Ninoy Aquino’s martyrdom and included a prayer for peace in the Spratly-Kalayaan Islands.


PAFC Winners.

Raffle winners claimed their prizes at a ceremony held at the Caregivers Home Health Services in Falls Church, VA. Philippine American Foundation for Charities, Inc. (PAFC) President Becky Pagsibigan, far left, congratulated the winners. Lourdes Alisuag won the $500 second prize and Ben Barrientos won the $250 third prize. UN Youth Assembly. 

Thirteen Migrant Heritage Commission (MHC) Youth Envoys took part in last month’s UN Youth General Assembly in New York. The gathering brings together 600 youth leaders from around the world to get involved in UN’s 8 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
