Indian American Scientist Wins Nobel Prize

Indian-born Venkatraman Ramakrishnan and two other scientists won the Nobel Prize for chemistry for their separate work on atom-by-atom mapping of the protein-making factories within cells, which has spurred the development of antibiotics, AP reported last month.

Ramakrishnan, 57, the report added, is the senior scientist and group leader at the structural studies division of the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England. Ramakrishnan will share the $1.4 million award with fellow American scientist Thomas Steitz and Ada Yonath of Israel for their study of ribosomes. Ribosomes produce the proteins that control the chemistry of plants, animals and humans.
