NVCS: Learning and Fun Activities



The Northern Virginia Chinese School (NVCS) recently held a successful Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, attended by some 300 people. NVCS is a non-profit organization supported by the volunteer services of 12 administrative officers, led by Principal Jeanny Ho. NVCS currently has more than 26 Chinese language teachers.

            Jeanny, Director of Information Technology at Edison Electric Institute, accepted the volunteer position as a parent and also because “promoting education is a passion.”

Founded in1989, the goal of NCVS is to provide a superb learning environment in Chinese language and culture for the next generation of ethnic Chinese families. It’s also open to the non-Chinese community in Northern Virginia . It offers Chinese language courses, including Phonic and Pin-Yin for students ranging from pre-K to 12th grade that focus on leadership and public speaking training.

Classes are held at the George Marshall High School in Falls Church . Students are enrolled in 14 levels of Chinese language classes from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays from September to June. The NVCS has elective cultural and athletic classes, including Chinese Folk Dance, Karate/Kung-Fu, Drawing/Painting, and Tennis for kids, and also Line Dance, Tennis, Guzheng for adults.  

NVCS also participates in social events in the Washington Metropolitan Chinese School Association (WMCSA) and local communities. Its social activities include the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival & Picnic, Halloween Parade, Santa Visits NVCS, Chinese Lunar New Year Festival & Luncheon, and Mother’s Day celebration.
