7th Asian Festival Draws Record Crowds

RESTON, Virginia–Organizers said some 50,000 people went to see the 7th Asian Festival held here on a summer weekend, calling it a huge success.

Shuttle buses at the off-site parking area transported the opening day crowd, estimated at more than 30,000. Others opted to drive and park their cars near the site, grateful for the cluster of trees providing shade on a sunny, 86-degree weather. Many came with their families.

The annual extravaganza showcased popular Asian American performers, food and products, a tennis tournament, handicraft demonstrations, as well as games and rides for the kids.

The Philippines was this year’s showcased country. Naomi Fitzwilliam, Travel Outlet’s Chief Operating Officer, said in an interview they have met with Travel Channel’s “Travel & Living” host Samantha Brown to film a segment on the Philippines “sometime in May next year.”

Travel Outlet was one of the festival sponsors. President and CEO Roy N. Estaris, welcoming festival goers to their booth, said they were stepping up efforts to promote the Philippines as a tourist destination. “A segment on Samantha’s show on Travel Channel is part of Travel Outlet’s projects for our 25th anniversary in 2011,” he said.

Naomi added, “We’re creating a buzz here, asking attendees here to write down their suggestions for the tourist spots to be filmed by Samantha and her crew.” Among the crowd favorites was Boracay, famous for its world-class beach and amenities.

Philippine Ambassador Willy C. Gaa said he was confident the crowds would leave the festival “with a more profound appreciation of how diversity contributes to the advancement of a more dynamic and progressive society.”

Festival organizer George Duangmanee thanked partners and participants “on behalf of Thai Tennis Organization in America.” He added, “It has been an honor working and partnering with you.”

U.S. Congressman Jim Moran made it on August 1. Moran aide Bryan Spoon told Duangmanee the congressman “had a very good time.” Bryan also congratulated him “on the turn-out.”

The festival also featured the culture and cuisine of other Asian destinations. People flocked to booths boasting of food from India, Thailand, Vietnam and others.

A main stage and two other stage venues showcased Bollywood and Indian American area stars, top Chinese American entertainers, as well as Filipino American individual and group showbiz talents.

The festival was made possible through many generous sponsors, led by Singha Beer. Partner Sponsors were Tetra, Reston Association, USTA Mid-Atlantic Virginia and The Thai Tennis Organization in America.
