OCA Commends CBS Radio for Dropping DJs
WASHINGTON -- OCA applauded a decision by CBS
recently to cancel New York-area morning show “The Dog House with JV &
Elvis.” CBS Radio also announced that DJs JV and Elvis (Jeff Vandergrift and
Dan Lay) along with their producer would no longer be working for CBS Radio or
its affiliates, including WFNY 92.3 FM.
“OCA would like to
extend our appreciation to CBS, CBS Radio, and WFNY for their attention and
response to this matter. We are heartened to know that CBS is concerned about
hateful and hurtful programming and we urge them to continue to take leadership
on this issue. OCA is grateful to members of its Business Advisory Council for
their commitment to ‘doing the right thing’ in pulling support for the show,”
said Ginny Gong, National President.
In early April,
“The Dog House” aired a six-minute segment of a prank call to a Chinese
restaurant featuring language insulting to Asian Pacific Americans, women, and
the gay community.
OCA National and
its local chapters in the New York City area (OCA-New York,
OCA-Westchester/Hudson Valley, OCA-New Jersey, OCA-Long Island), with support
from other APA and civil rights organizations, were successful in organizing a
nation-wide campaign to fire the DJs and their producer.
This included a letter writing campaign,
an online petition which garnered more than 10,000 signatures in a week, and
outreach to advertisers to pull support from the show and station. OCA chapters
and local groups were successful in meeting face to face with WFNY and CBS
executives.
“Without the collaboration and leadership
of our local chapters on the ground, our network of APA and civil rights
organizations, and corporate advertisers, this would not have been possible,”
said Michael Lin, Executive Director, “It is only through the dedication and
hard work of concerned people and organizations that we can continue to
advocate for a culture of tolerance and respect.”
