The “Concert for Japan” benefit event will be held on March 11 to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami disaster in Japan, and to raise funds to help the survivors.

Admission to the concert is free. Cash and check donations are, however, welcome at the door. Checks are payable to: Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA. Organizers said those who are unable to attend but would like to make a donation may email care.nation@gmail.com or call (703) 888-6143.

Event sponsors are the Japan-Asia Society of Washington, D.C., Toho Koto Society, American University’s Arts and Sciences Audio Technology Program, Sushi Taro, Japan De Luxe tour, Tachibana restaurant, Matuba, Niwano Hana and Tako Grill.

One year ago, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake, one of the largest in the history, hit Northeast Japan. About 20,000 people were killed, mainly by the tsunami. The survivors, including many people affected by the nuclear accident, have been facing various difficulties. They are still coping with irreplaceable loss of loved ones, livelihood, community and culture.

Professional musicians and talented music lovers are all volunteering for this benefit concert. The program includes Koto (traditional Japanese harp) and Kocarina (wooden flute) performances. Also: piano and voice numbers, featuring traditional and popular Japanese songs, Mozart, Amazing Grace, Pie Jesu, and Nella Fantasia.

Organizers are inviting people to bring their family and friends, saying, “The concert will also be an excellent opportunity for children to be exposed to great music and different culture, and to learn to care about those who are in need of help.”
