2011 Volvo XC60 T6 AWD R-Design
By: Lily Chen

Volvos are well known for being extremely safe cars. With latest safety innovation such as Intelligent Drive Information System (IDIS) and Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake, the XC60 is no exception. Additionally, given sport-car like handling abilities and its spacious design, the XC60 makes it an ideal choice for anyone considering a crossover vehicle with a good mix of performance, utility, comfort and style.

The XC60 T6 AWD R-Design is delivered with an impressive list of standard safety features. XC 60’s unique and innovative Intelligent Driver Information System (IDIS) acts like an assistant and prioritizes information to be provided to the driver while driver is performing a difficult maneuver which requires more focus. For example, while the driver is speeding up to pass a car, the system delays the notification of incoming phone call or the display of other non-pertinent information until the maneuver is complete in order to reduce distraction. Its Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake is the world’s first system in preventing pedestrian accidents by automatically stopping the car up to a speed of 22 mph if driver fails to apply to brake on their own after being alerted. Another distinctive safety design in the XC 60 is the City Safety System, which when driven below 18 mph, automatically engages the brake to prevent collisions or reduce impact. Additionally, the XC 60’s other protective features include Anti-submarining Protection, Dual-chamber Side Airbags, Energy-absorbing Interior, Pre-prepared Restraints, Side Impact and Whiplash Protection System. With a Technology Package, the driver will also get Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Collision Warning with Auto Brake, and Distance/Driver Alert Control.

Standard Performance technologies include All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction which employs an electronic management system that constantly monitors the speed of the wheels, the throttle, engine torque, engine speed and the breaks. The system is able to detect and reduce power when tires lose traction and redirect power to wheels with the best grip given a particular weather condition. The XC 60’s Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) Anti-skid System and Roll Stability Control (RSC) assist in avoiding fishtails, spinouts, and rollovers. In particular, the RSC utilizes a gyroscopic sensor that calculates the lean angle and rollover risk; when necessary, the system will cut engine power and apply brake to reduce centrifugal force to help regain balance. For road enthusiasts, XC 60’s stiffer anti-roll bars help keep the vehicle flat through hard turns and its firmer shocks improves body control and amplify road feedback.

The 2011 XC 60 comes with an upgraded petrol engine. With 300 horsepower and 325lb-ft of torque, the six-cylinder, turbocharged T6 has a displacement of 3.0 litres, and offers even sharper performance, due to a reduction in internal friction. The All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system is equipped with PreTension® which improves take-off speed and delivers higher traction on slippery surfaces.

The XC 60 consists of a strong athletic body with high ground clearance and 20” Alloy wheels. Attributes such as décor trim, side scuff plates, sport tailpipes and silk metal finishing make the R-Design boldly recognizable. Its integrated roof rails, which are available in both charcoal and silk-metal, also add impressions of rigidity. Inside the XC 60, its award-winning interior encompasses modern Scandinavian simplicities with a gorgeous floating stack and accented leather. The three-split rear seat provides an alternative for seating two passengers comfortably with an armrest in between. With a cargo capacity of 67.4 cu. ft, the XC 60 can easily seat five and still offer abundant space for cargo. With consideration for families with small children, there’s even an option for a Dual Two-State Integrated Booster Seats.
