WWII Exhibit.

The exhibit, “Go For Broke: Japanese American Soldiers Fighting on Two Fronts,” opened on August 8 in Ellis Island, New York City in celebration of the 65th anniversary. Actor George Takei, Captain Sulu in TV’s Star Trek, was the invited emcee. The keynote speaker was Major General Kelly McKeague, USAF who will represent Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. CAPAD-MD.

U.S. Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Chair of the Democratic congressional campaign committee, said he would look on the issues of concern in the Asian American community. The issues were taken up at the breakfast meeting held by Coalition of Asian Pacific American Democrats of Maryland (CAPAD-MD). OCA-DC Co-President Stan Tsai and other Chinese American leaders raised the issue on U.S. self-limit rules and regulation regarding exports to East Asia. Also present at the meeting was Maryland Delegate Susan C. Lee.


ePassports.

Consul General Domingo Nolasco introduced the biometric machine during the launching of electronic passport services at the Philippine embassy. To better serve its nationals and the public, the consular office also moved to a larger facility at its refurbished building across the embassy.

Thai Tennis.

The Thai Tennis Organization of America held a successful tournament during the 7th Annual Asian Festival, held in Reston, Virginia. The tournament was open to all ages and offered major prizes.

Writers’ Group.

The North American Chinese Writers Association U.S. Capital Chapter has elected Zhang Ming-Ming as its new president. Zhang then nominated new board of executive committee, whose chair and members were simultaneously elected on the spot.

Essay Winner.

Evaline Cheng won 2nd Place in the 2010 Essay Contest of the Chinese American Citizens Alliance. Evaline recently graduated from Lynbrook High School's Class of 2010, where she lead outreach initiatives to spread awareness about hepatitis B in her school and community. She was recognized for her research projects in both the county and state science fairs. She will attend Princeton University this fall, where she will pursue a degree in biology or chemistry.


Research Paper.

Tutubeatles Night.

Tutubeatles Festival, organized by local artist and Tutubi (dragonfly) art group founder Julian Oteyza and reuniting his 80s band, drew a big crowd at the Karaoke Night, held occasionally at the American Legion Post 139 in Virginia.

Punjabi Sports Festival.

The Punjabi Sports Festival 2010 drew over 300 athletes and about 500 spectators. The 16th annual sports festival was organized by the Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago, led by PSC Chairperson Mohina Ahluwalia. The festival was held at Community Park in Addison Illinois.


International Leadership Foundation.

The Leadership & Business Conference, hosted last month in this capital by the International Leadership Foundation (ILF) and the Coalition of Asian American Business Organizations (CAABO), attracted 150 participants, including ILF Young Ambassadors, local and out-of-state CEOs, and business organization leaders.
