Rockville, MD -- Montgomery College’s diverse international student community is represented in “International Student Project,” a portrait photography exhibit, on display now through December 21. Curated by Professor Brian Jones, the exhibit features the work of Montgomery College students, staff and faculty. It is located in the Communication Arts Technologies Gallery, Room 106, at the Rockville Campus, 51 Mannakee Street, Rockville, Md.

“The College recognizes the tremendous impact having more than 170 countries represented in our student body,” said Jones, a professor of photography. “This diversity has created a thriving learning community among our students, faculty and staff, and we sought to highlight these students in our exhibit.”

In the spring of 2008, Professor Jones was awarded a “Make It Happen Innovation Grant” from Montgomery College to support the creation of the exhibition, posters and images of the participants.

The Montgomery Scholars Anthropology 101 class conducted interviews for the exhibit, documenting the stories of individual students, particularly those who overcame enormous obstacles in their country of origin. By interviewing the international students, the scholars hoped to gain an understanding of some of the global forces behind immigration and insight into the acculturation process of individuals and groups when they move to the United States. A number of students taking graphic design, television, photography courses at the College also contributed to this project.
