Library of Congress Asian Reading Room Open House Features Asian Music
Program includes performances and rarely displayed instruments

The Asian Division Friends Society upcoming annual open house will be of great interest to musicians and musicology students alike. This year’s theme is “Intangible Cultural Heritage - Musical Instruments in Asian Cultures” which dovetails with the Division’s new push towards acquiring materials relating to endangered and/or ephemeral aspects of Asian culture.

The event will be on Saturday, December 6, 2008 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Asian Division reading room, room LJ-150 of the Jefferson Building located at 10 First Street SE near the Capitol South and Union Station metro stops. Featured performers at this event include the Chinese Jasmine Gu Zheng Academy playing an ancient Chinese string musical instruments called Zheng, a stringed instrument orchestra called the Northern Virginia Rondalla Group, and Adam Friedman on the Japanese Shakuhachi. There will also be a variety of Asian musical instruments on display including Japanese and Chinese flutes from the Library of Congress Music Division’s Dayton C Miller Collection, Thai string instruments and a Thai drum from the Royal Thai Collection, and Filipino mouth and nose harps. Books about Asian music and pictures of Asian musical instruments will also be on display. Light refreshments will also be served. The event is free and open to the public.
