GLOBAL COMMUNITY SERVICE FOUNDATION NEARS

By: Embassy Event and Live Auction Brings Fundraising Total to More Than $83,000

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Global Community Service Foundation (GCSF) is quickly approaching its 2007 fundraising goal of $106,300 for its “Adopt-A-Village” projects in Viet Nam.

The Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization has surpassed $83,000, almost half of which was raised at its “Celebration of Southeast Asian Culture” event held last week at the Embassy of Viet Nam here.

Nearly 150 people, including the Embassy of Viet Nam Deputy Chief Mission Dang Dzung Vu, attended the event highlighted by Vietnamese cuisine and a live auction of several one-of-a-kind Southeast Asian artworks and exclusive trips to Viet Nam. Hosted by WJLA-TV reporter Scott Thuman and local author Joanna Nicholson, the live auction alone netted more than $24,000 with a grand total from the November 8 event eclipsing $36,000.

“Global Community Service Foundation is extremely pleased by the outpouring of support last week for our ‘Adopt-A-Village’ programs in Viet Nam,” said Marcia Selva, GCSF president and founder. “We thank everyone, from the Embassy of Viet Nam to our many generous donors, who helped make GCSF’s 2006 Celebration of Southeast Asian Culture an unqualified success.”

“We are nearing our 2007 goal of raising more than $100,000. These funds will support our worthwhile humanitarian projects. We are excited about the possibility of surpassing that amount before the start of the New Year,” she added.

Proceeds from this year’s fundraiser will benefit the “Adopt-A-Village’ programs in Viet Nam, such as building a housing extension for the Danang Street Kids Program; housing for landmine victims in Quang Tri; classrooms for a kindergarten in Le Mon; a Braille printer for the Blind and Disabled Association of Dong Ha; purchasing HIV/AIDS medications; and other humanitarian projects.
