Asian Americans Receive President’s Volunteers Awards

Washington–Chiling Tong, International Leadership Foundation CEO and a newly-appointed member of the National Advisory Council, recently presented the President’s Volunteer Service Award to deserving Asian Pacific American (APA) leaders.

The presidential award recognizes individuals, families and groups that have achieved a certain standard–measured by the cumulative number of hours of service earned over the course of a lifetime.

Ms. Tong noted: “America has a long and proud tradition of volunteer service. Now more than ever, volunteers are renewing their commitment to help others and make new connections that bring us closer together as families, as neighbors, as communities, and as a nation.”

The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation was established in 2003 to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers make and to encourage more people to serve.

The Asian American leaders honored include the following: M. Farook Sait, Director, Office of Civil 3Rights, Food Safety & Inspection Service under the Department of Agriculture: Working in the area of civil rights at the U. S. department of Agriculture, he has been a bridge between the federal government and the APA community and has promoted civic awareness and public service in the APA community.

Edward and Corinna Shen: They have provided unstinting support of youth activities and have helped to invest in the next generation of APA leaders.

Pyramid System, Inc.: Founder Jeff Hwang and Sherry Hwang have provided commitment of time, talent, and financial support for all the charity activities and events of organizations such as ILF and Tzu Chi Foundation.

Tony Cheng family: Long noted for their quiet philanthropy, they have dedicated all their resources to foster the success of our youth and community and helped to establish the Chinatown Community Cultural Center.

James Whang: Beyond his own participation, he has recruited and involved the main stream business community and enhanced the image of the APA community.
