Legislative Forum

Richmond, Virginia–CAPAVA president Ting-Yi Oei said the organization’s 7th Annual Legislative Forum, to be held on February 11 and 12 in this state, will have a different format this year. Events include a rally at the Capitol, visits to legislators and a meeting with representatives of the Republican and Democratic caucuses at the Capitol, VAAB meeting in the late afternoon, and an evening reception at the Crowne Plaze. Day 2 features panel discussions: Virginia Commerce Secretary James Cheng on economic development; on immigration issue, Lakshmi Challa moderating with advocate, lawyer and consultant Claire Gastanaga, and Dr. Larry Shinagawa, University of Maryland Director of Asian American Studies.

Trade Center

New York, NY–The World Trade Center Association (WTCA) of New York has signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FNCCI) of Kathmandu to facilitate the establishment of World Trade Center in Kathmandu. The signing ceremony took place at WTCA Headquarters here January 12. Present were Kush K. Joshi, President of FNCCI; Kali Prasad Pokharel, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Nepal in Washington, D.C.; Robert Fruech, Director of WTCA; Rajendra B. Shrestha, CEO of Office Abroad in D.C. and members of trade delegation from Nepal. Establishment of WTC aims to usher Nepal into an era of economic prosperity. WTC provides market access to more than 90 countries across the globe.

AALDEF Awards

New York, NY–On February 8, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) will honor A.B. Cruz III, Chief Legal Officer & Corporate Secretary of Scripps Networks Interactive, Inc., and Lillian Kimura, civil rights advocate and former president of the Japanese American Citizens League, with the 2011 Justice in Action Awards at its Annual Lunar New Year Gala. Ken Lowe, Chairman of the Board, President and CEO of Scripps Networks Interactive, Inc., will present the award to A.B. Cruz III, and Philip Tajitsu Nash, Asian American studies professor and attorney, will present the award to Lillian Kimura. The AALDEF Justice in Action Awards honors exceptional individuals for their outstanding achievements and contributions in advancing justice and equality.

AOF Events

Washington, D.C.–America’s Opportunity Fund has launched two new programs. The first one is “In the Dome” conversation series. The series aims to provide the community with more opportunities to interact with political leaders and elected officials. On February 16, Rep. Karen Bass (CA-33) and Rep. Hansen Clarke (MI-13) will talk about their insights and experiences in running for office. The next event is Candidate Training, co-hosted by Rutgers University College Dems. The two-day training covers all the ins and outs of what is needed to be a viable candidate.

 

New Judges

California–80-20 PAC recently reported that there are two new Asian American federal judges confirmed by the U.S. Senate: Edmond Chang, District Judge for N. Illinois and Leslie Kobayashi, Disrict Judge for Hawaii. Nationwide, there are now 12 Asian American federal judges, one at the higher Appeals Court level. Two Asian American nominees still await Senate confirmation.

Leadership Program

San Francisco, CA–The 2011 Leadership California’s women’s leadership program is still open for registration. The program aims to help participants expand their network and meet women leaders representing California’s corporate, government, nonprofit, diplomatic, legal and political sectors. Chamber of Commerce

Dallas, TX–Last January 28, the Greater Dallas Asian American Chamber of Commerce held its Installation of Officers and Annual Meeting, welcoming its new board of directors, with Michael Lee of New York Life as 2011 Chairman. Collin County Judge Keith Selt was the inducting official.

 

MVMA AmeriCorps

Silver Spring, Maryland–The Maryland Vietnamese Mutual Association (www.mdvietmutual.org) last month hired AmeriCorps State positions through the New American’s Citizenship Project of Maryland. The program, which starts its second year in September, focuses on providing individuals in possession of their green card the necessary services to move forward through the citizenship/naturalization process. Fringe Festival Show

Washington, D.C.–Dash Productions, a William and Mary student Alumni company, is looking for director and crew for its award-winning show, “Every Night I Die.” The show is a tragic drama about love, violence, and magic in the southern Philippines. There will be a small stipend, commensurate with a percentage of ticket sales. Like most Capital Fringe shows, the work will be performed in July, with rehearsals to begin early June. Director: Applicants must be D.C. area residents with relevant experience, a passion for theatre, and a clear vision. Availability in June and July is a must. Technical Designer(s): Should have at least one year experience with the Capital Fringe, and have experience with shoe-string budgets, as well as well-rounded design experience. Asia Society

Washington, D.C.–Asia Society will hold a book discussion on February 1. Author Xu Xi will read from and discuss her latest novel, “Habit of a Foreign Sky,” set in the midst of the Asian financial crisis. The book is short-listed for the inaugural Man Asian Literary Prize. The author of seven books of fiction and essays is currently faculty chair at Vermont College of Fine Arts and a full time writer-in-residence at the City University of Hong Kong.
