NIH Briefs APA Media.

The National Cancer Institute Office of Communications and Education, under the National Institutes of Health, hosted a successful seminar for Asian Pacific American media last month on the mission of its Office of Partnership and Dissemination Initiatives, headed by Director Madeline La Porta, and about cancer issues related to the Asian American communities. James Alexander is the Office’s Team Leader for Multicultural Media.


Gansler Meets Visiting Judges.

A group of judges from China’s Guangxi Zhuang Nationality Autonomous Region were on a study tour in the U.S. last month. Maryland Attorney General Douglas Gansler and Maryland Delegate Susan Lee met the group at Mei Wah Restaurant in Bethesda.


Annual Pilgrimage.

The national annual Filipino pilgrimage to Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage (Birhen ng Antipolo) was held recently at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. A big celebration will be held on the 15th annual pilgrimage on June 23 next year.

Teachers’ Peaceful Rally.

Prince George’s County Filipino and other international teachers, led by Pilipino Educators’ Network (PEN), last month held a silent picket in front of the Department of Labor Office in D.C. MHC Co-Executive Directors Grace Valera and Jesse A. Gatchalian were also present at the picket to support them.

2nd Leadership Summit.

OCA-Chicago brought leaders from Asian American community organizations and government agency liaisons together for a leadership summit at the McDonald University on July 8. Tom Jayashi, Interim Executive Director from OCA National Center, facilitated the meeting. Issues addressed at the summit included priorities facing the Asian American communities, taking ownership of new initiatives, and assessing the community’s shared goals.
