GIS Specialist I/II

Maryland Environmental Service has an opening for a GIS Specialist I/II in our Environmental Monitoring/Geospatial and Engineering Services Section at our Headquarters facility in Millersville, MD. The selected candidate will assist with field data collection (overnight travel within MD is a possibility), populating databases, maintaining a geo-database, and testing new applications. The selected candidate may be assigned to projects where they are required to work on site at various other offices/agencies. The candidate must be able to read and understand the following: aerial images, stormwater plans, cadastral, planimetric and topographic datasets. Skills must include the ability to produce complex analytical maps or quantifiable information.

Qualifications include a Bachelor’s Degree in geography, environmental science, or computer science with a GIS emphasis, and 1 year of experience working with ESRI GIS products. Must maintain current knowledge of GIS technology, have the ability to work independently, and be able to communicate effectively. Must be able to pass a physical exam, be able to lift 50lbs, and have a valid driver’s license with less than 5 points.

An environmental background along with knowledge of global positioning technologies (Trimble GPS Units are used by MES), including proficiency with current Windows, Tablets and Mobile Operating Systems is a plus. Specifically ArcGIS, ESRI’s Modelbuilder and experience in creating and editing data in an ESRI desktop environment is a plus. Direct experience with local or regional government is desirable.
