Come join us on the opening night of the 2014 14th Annual DC Asian Pacific American Film Festival. KUMU HINA is a powerful film about the struggle to maintain Pacific Islander culture and values, told told through the lens of a Native Hawaiian teacher who is both a proud and confident māhū, or transgender woman, and an admired kumu, or cultural practitioner. The Mixed Race Audio Documentary

This multimedia screening is a culmination of a three month long project with the DC Humanities Council to tell the stories of mixed race DC residents. The screening will feature the varied and colorful stories of DC residents Michelle Phipps Evans, Dana Tai Soon Burgess, Tara Trinity, and Lealin Queen. The program will feature a nationwide webcast speech by President Jimmy Carter on important “Issues in U.S. – China Relations” on this 35th anniversary year (1979-2014) of the establishments of formal diplomatic relations. Following his talk, President Carter will respond to the questions e-mailed in from audience members in Baltimore and throughout the country.

After the national webcast program, Frank Jannuzi, in person, will comment on the webcast speech and will also speak on the subject of “Six Dragon Imperiling the Rise of China and Implications for U.S.-China Relations”. Prior to his present position with the Mansfield Foundation; Mr. Jannuzi served as Policy Director, East Asian and Pacific Affairs for the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 1997 to 2012.
