Gandhi Foundation

Bethesda, Maryland–Srimati Kamala, president of the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Foundation recently thanked the Foundation’s contributors and supporters through the years. She also appealed for continued support for Gandhi Center ’s services. Since 1959, the Foundation has relied entirely on voluntary contributions of services and resources. Census Data

Washington, D.C.–Asian American Action Fund newsletter reports over half of new births in the U.S. are non-white, based on the 2010 Census analysis. William Frey of the Brookings Institution noted: “The new Census results show 49.8 percent of infants under age one are members of a race-ethnic minority–up from 42.4 percent in 2000. Given this trajectory, and the fact that the Census was taken well over a year ago, it is almost certain we have now ‘tipped’ racially, and more than half of all national births are minorities.”

Leadership 101

San Francisco, CA–OCA is extending the APIA U: Leadership 101 Training Host Application deadline to November 4. It is urging universities and colleges who have not hosted the program to apply now. The training program provides an opportunity for students to network and meet other Asian Pacific Islander Americans in their region, while focusing on the development of leadership and organizational skills relevant to the APIA campuses and community.

 

‘The Party’ Wins

New York, NY–“The Party: The Secret World of China’s Communist Rulers” (HarperCollins Publishers) by Richard McGregor has won Asia Society’s third annual Bernard Schwartz Book Award. McGregor will be honored and presented with a $20,000 prize at Asia Society here on December 1. The award is the only one that recognizes non-fiction books for their outstanding contributions to the understanding of contemporary Asia or U.S.-Asia relations. The Party was selected from more than 100 nominations submitted by U.S. and Asia-based publishers for books published in 2010.

San Francisco, CA–The Filipina Women’s Network honored New American Media Chief of Staff and New America Now Television Anchor/Executive Producer Odette Alcazaren-Keeley as one of the “100 Most Influential Filipina Women in the United States ” in the Builders and Emerging Leaders category.

$15M vs. Child Labor

Washington, D.C.–The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) awarded the Philippines a $15-million grant, for use in a project to combat exploitative child labor in sugarcane growing areas in the Philippines . The announcement was made on October 3 at the DOL launch of its annual Report on International Child and/or Forced Labor. US Labor Secretary Hilda Solis and Philippine Ambassador to the U.S. Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. were at the event.

 

Film Festival

San Diego, California –The San Diego Asian Film Foundation (SDAFF) is partnering with DramaFever to present DIGIFEST. Digifest is the first- ever virtual on-demand exhibition of the best independent movies and documentaries produced by Asian Americans. It will run through December 31. Viewers will have the opportunity to watch films online for free, engage in online conversations with filmmakers, and vote for their favorite film. Dakshini Festival

Washington, D.C. –Dakshina’s 8th Annual Fall Festival of Indian Arts was a success. Washington Post critic Pamela Kidron wrote: “The legendary Bharatanatyam exponent Leela Samson and her Kalakshetra Repertory Company danced so well Saturday at the Lincoln Theatre–in the concluding performance of the Fall Festival of Indian Arts–that the ultimate standing ovation was richly deserved.”

Northrop Grumman

Richmond, Virginia–Governor Bob McDonnell cut the ribbon for the Northrop Grumman Corporate Headquarters in Fairfax County last September 23. He was joined by Northrop Grumman CEO and President Wes Bush, Senator Mark Warner, Fairfax Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova, Congressman Jim Moran, Congressman Gerry Connolly and other officials for the ceremony. The relocation of Northrop Grumman’s corporate headquarters brings 300 new high-paying jobs to Virginia .
