OCA Awards Walmart, APA Corporate Leaders

WASHINGTON–OCA honored Walmart with its 2011 Outstanding Corporate Partner Award, eight Asian Pacific American (APA) corporate leaders for their achievement and service, and presented the Community Service Award to Johnnie Giles, Executive Director of External Affairs for Comcast Corporation and Vice President of External Affairs for Comcast Cable.

OCA’s 20th anniversary of the National Asian Pacific American Corporate Achievement Awards, held October 7 at the Capital Hilton in this nation’s capital, drew 300 guests. News4 General Assignments reporter Elaine Reyes was the emcee.

OCA National President Ken Lee said the eight honorees “have embraced our mission by being leaders in their communities, and also by being committed to strengthening diversity in the workplace.”

Lee said with the awards come “much expectation and responsibility,” and a “lifelong commitment” to OCA’s social justice mission.

He noted OCA’s partnership with Walmart through the years. Walmart is a member of OCA’s Business Advisory Council, a vital link between OCA and the business community, providing financial, professional, and strategic guidance to OCA. The Walmart Foundation also contributes to OCA’s Internship Program.

“We have seen the community move forward over the years, and OCA has been among those really leading the way,” Walmart Senior Director for Corporate Affairs T. Anthony Waller said in an interview.

OCA Business Advisory Council (BAC) Chair Bernie Collins said he looked forward “to celebrating our 40th year.” Collins and BAC Vice Chair David Lin thanked OCA supporters through the years.

This year’s eight honorees are: Jatinder Ronny Bindra–Vice President Global Business Analytics, Kraft Foods; Ronald Chang–Vice President, Mergers and Acquisitions, UPS; Wanda Denson-Low–Senior Vice President, Office of Internal Governance, The Boeing Company;

Myra Doria–Vice President–General Manager, West Division, McDonald’s; Johnnie Giles–Executive Director of External Affairs for Comcast Corporation and Vice President of External Affairs for Comcast Cable, Comcast; Awan Kazi–Agency Field Consultant, State Farm; Dinesh Popat–Vice President, Marketing, Service Model Transformation, Avon Products, Inc., and Satoshi Watanabe–Senior Vice President, Cross-Border Governance, Wells Fargo.

Early in the day, over a hundred attended the 3rd annual APA young professionals’ event: Build, Breakthrough and Believe. Jeff Moy is OCA’s Professional Leadership Development Program Manager. OCA Interim Executive Director Tom Hayashi said it was essential to provide leaders with mentoring early in their careers.
