Voter ID Law in Virginia

A new voter identification card is being mailed to registered voters in Virginia prior to the November elections. However, eligible voters should bring the following forms of identification to the polls to be allowed to vote.

Acceptable forms of identification:

  • Virginia Voter Registration Card

  • Valid Virginia driver's license

  • Military ID

  • Any Federal, Virginia state or local government-issued ID

  • Employer issued photo ID card

  • Concealed handgun permit

  • Valid student ID issued by any institution of higher education located in the Commonwealth of Virginia

  • Current utility bill, bank statement, government check or paycheck indicating the name and address of the voter

  • Social Security card (*please see below as the social security card does not satisfy special federal ID requirements)

NOTE: A voter who does not bring an acceptable ID to the polls will be offered a provisional ballot after which the voter has to submit a copy of one of the IDs by Friday noon following the election. IDs may be submitted via fax, email, or in person. If submitted via mail, the ID copies must be delivered by noon to the election board.

Voter ID Law in Maryland

Acceptable forms of identification:

  • Maryland driver's license

  • MVA-issued ID card

  • Student, employee, or Military ID card

  • U.S. passport, or any other State or federal government-issued ID card

  • Current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document that shows your name and address. (Current means that the document is dated within 3 months of the election.)

NOTE:

Voters may check if their ballots are counted at the Maryland State Board of Elections website, 10 days after the election. A Certificate of Participation may be obtained from the election judge should the voter’s employer need proof of voting.

Voter ID Law in District of Columbia:

Registered voters do not need to present proof of residence to vote, however some polling places require ID to enter the facility. It is therefore encouraged that you take some form of identification with you to vote.

If you will be registering during the early voting period or at the polls on Election Day, you will need to provide proof of residence in order to register and vote a special ballot. If you are a first-time voter who registered by mail and did not provide proof of residence when registering, you will need to show proof of residence in order to cast a regular ballot.

Acceptable forms of identification:

  • Copy of current and valid photo identification

  • Copy of a current utility bill (does not include cell phone)

  • Bank statement

  • Government check

  • Paycheck

  • Or other government document that shows your name and address.
