Why I am Running as an Independent Congressional Candidate for VA's 8th District, Submitted by Jason Howell

The Asian American community is the fastest growing demographic in America. Asian Americans don’t seem to grab the headlines as often as other communities but as the fastest growing demographic, anyone seeking a leadership role must understand, acknowledge and learn to leverage the power of the Asian American community. Understanding this fact, I chose to introduce myself here in Asian Fortune.

I can take responsibility for the issues that affect all Americans: the slow economy, the budget deficit and the partisanship. I am an author with an accounting and finance background. The person who had the most influence on my professional career was a Chinese woman from Shanghai. She was an intelligent boss and patient with those whom she respected. She understood her strengths and her challenges and encouraged me to recognize mine. We worked directly together for four years at a relatively small non-profit called the National Association of College and University Business Officers. It was the longest I had worked at any firm in accounting. It is with her that I learned to balance a strict attention to detail along with the ability to create relationships.

These two skills, attention to detail and relationship management are what I bring to Congress. I will use my background in accounting to work on balancing the budget with both revenue increases and expense reductions. I will work to eliminate tax loopholes (i.e., H.R. 1935 to treat “Carried Interest” income as ordinary income rather than investment income (nearly $18Billion in additional revenue over 10 years)). I will specifically work to broaden our national tax base by adjusting H.R. 4173 (Dodd-Frank Act) so small banks that only lend and deposit are granted exemptions. To capture expense reductions I will partner with the GAO’s newly required report that highlights 81 areas of government program duplication and overlap. The United States has an important relationship not just with the Asian community within the United States but also the community within China’s and Japan’s borders (the two largest holders of U.S. debt). We have a responsibility to reflect good financial stewardship both domestically and internationally. We can do that by getting into financial details and working together in the Congress as colleagues rather than adversaries. As an Independent with no party allegiance, I will model that ability and behavior.

Even challenges associated with immigration reform can be decreased by outlining a proper mission, strategy and specific tactics for people entering the country both temporarily and permanently. My first specific proposal is to change the accounting rule applied to user fee agencies like the US Citizenship and Immigration Services that are a disincentive to processing applications more quickly.

I want to work for you in U.S. Congress. Thank you for your consideration and hopefully your vote.
