Olympics Return to South Korea

Cheers can still be heard in South Korea as the city of “Pyeongchang was granted the right to host the 2018 Winter Olympics,” said Michael Kulma, Asia Society’s Executive Director of Global Leadership Initiatives.

This marks the second time Korea will host an Olympics, he added. “The first time was in Seoul in the summer of 1988–an enormous success by any measure–which also helped usher in a new wave of democratization in South Korea, though it was partly marred by a boycott from North Korea.”

Pyeongchang won the vote on July 6, according to an AP report. It only needed 48 votes to win, the report added, but it garnered an impressive 63 of the 95 cast in the first round of the secret ballot, while Munich, Germany received 25 and Annecy, France seven.
