Japan Wins World Cup

Japan became the first Asian country to win the Women’s World Cup, beating the U.S. in a thriller of a game held in Frankfurt, Germany on July 17.

The Japanese players bested the Americans, 3-1 on penalty kicks, after coming from behind twice in a 2-2 tie, according to an AP report. The report added goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori made two brilliant saves in the shootout.

The victory meant a lot to the champions, who had dedicated all their games to their countrymen. It served to lift the spirits of their people, who are still struggling to recover from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. The final was a tough loss for the amazing U.S. team, which had shown grit and determination in their previous games.
