Move Around to Move Up, AAGEN Executives Urged

By: Jennie L. Ilustre

The Asian American Government Executives Network (www.aagen.org) held a forum on May 1 for its senior executive members. Charles Ingersoll, Senior Client Partner at Korn/Ferry International, was the guest speaker.

Ingersoll imparted words of wisdom, based on his experience at the company, “the world’s largest recruiting agency.” He noted that 48 per cent – nearly half – of government employees and executives “stay in the same agency.”

He stressed, “It is important for you to move around if you really want to have a great career in the federal government.” He said it was a way of getting fresh ideas and widening one’s circle.

He also underscored the advantage of being in “revolving doors.” He added that employers are always on the look-out for “people with a combination of public sector and private sector experience.”

After the Q & A portion of the program, Executive Director Thomas Phan delivered the closing remarks. The event’s venue was the China Garden Restaurant in Rosslyn, Virginia.
