MLK Quote

Washington, D.C.–The misleading quote on the recently-dedicated Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in this capital will be corrected and completed by January next year, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis told the MLK family February 10, Politico newspaper reported. Currently, the quote states: “I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness.”

Actually, MLK’s remarks in 1968 were: “Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter.” When he was the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program director, Frank Odo noted in an interview that Asian Americans and other minorities owed a lot to the civil rights movement.
