Asian Senior Center in Chinatown Gets Facelift Courtesy of AARP

It was smiles all around as the Family Matters Asian and Pacific Islander Senior Services Center in Chinatown got a facelift courtesy of AARP. In the season of giving, AARP made a donation to fund needed improvements at the Center located at 417 G Place, NW in DC. Asian and Pacific Islander seniors who use the center cheerfully tried out new chairs, tablecloths and sound equipment during the celebration on December 13th. The event was sponsored by AARP’s DC State Office, which is housed only a few blocks away in the AARP National Office Building at 6th and E Sts., NW.

The Center's members, mostly Chinatown residents who are age 60+, showed their appreciation with a plaque presented to Louis Davis, Jr., State Director of the DC State Office of AARP. Members also formed a choir and sang "America the Beautiful" and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas." The committee Davis pulled together to lead the improvement process included two members of the Center and, during the celebration, each spoke highly of the outcome of the committee's work.

Davis emceed the brief program, and John Caine, AARP Southeast Region Director, congratulated the committee on its achievement and predicting more to come. Julie Koo, Executive Director of the D.C. Office of Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs and Rinaldo Washington of Family Matters also made congratulatory remarks at the celebration.
