DC Chamber of Commerce 2012 Priorities

By: Barbara Lang

In a major victory for the DC Chamber of Commerce and the business community as a whole, the “District Resident Workforce Tax Incentive Act of 2011” was recently introduced in the DC City Council. If passed, this bill will lower the franchise tax in the city–the first item in what we call the “Chamber Fix,” our prescription for improving the business climate in the District.

Of course, the introduction of this bill is just the first step. The Chamber will continue to advocate for this, and other measures to lower the cost of doing business in DC, in upcoming Council hearings throughout 2012.

Some of our other priorities include overhauling the regulatory review process, expanding third-party review for permitting and licensing, providing tax incentives for employing DC residents, removing enrollment caps on District universities, and lessening the regulatory burden for financial, technology, and other growing industries that relocate into the District. Check out the full list of our legislative goals online at www.dcchamber.org<http://www.dcchamber.org>, under “Chamber Fix.”

As focused as we are on governmental issues, we’re not just about laws and regulations at the Chamber. We’re also planning a host of networking opportunities and events for 2012. Our regular programs—the popular Speed Networking events, Business Networking Receptions, Power Lunches and Morning Fix breakfasts–re fantastic opportunities to meet new clients and customers. Further, our annual Chamber’s Choice Awards gala, Small Business Expo, Policy Forums, and other events draw thousands of top business executives from all industries.

Saving money for our members is a top priority for the Chamber as well. Through our ChamberPerk$ program, our members have saved tens of thousands of dollars on essential business services and supplies through partners such as FedEx, Office Depot, Constant Contact, and more.

I’d like to extend a personal invitation to Asian Fortune readers to come be a part of the DC Chamber of Commerce. For over 73 years, we have been the voice of business, large and small, in the District. Whether you’re located in the District or just do business here, the Chamber is at work for you.
