03.15.15 TAI CHI SEMINAR

Featuring Master C.P. Ong & Master Xiaolin Lu

Most of us know Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan) as a slow-motion exercise that bestows health benefits. However, the art has always remained enigmatic because it is wrapped up in the metaphysics of yin and yang. The exercise itself, though captivating, does not appear to provide the vigor of a regular physical exercise. But the slow-motion exercise builds a strength that is uncharacteristic of physical strength—it is not apparent, thus dubbed inner strength. The talk will pierce through the veil of enigma by studying balance. It will discuss the abstruse yin-yang concepts of Taijiquan in plain terms in the framework of physiology and physics. We shall also see how inner balance relates to sports and martial arts. From the pragmatic approach, we can see the many health benefits that are derived from the exercise, and the mystery of the art is lifted. The talk will include some practice of the basic motion of Taijiquan, as well as a demonstration.
